About Sometimes Grandma

First published in 2014, Sometimes Grandma… Forgets My Name introduced young readers to Jai, Justis, and a family's journey through Alzheimer's disease. That story became the foundation for Harmony Street Kids, a children's book and learning series exploring the many ways Alzheimer's disease and dementia affect children, families, and the people they love.

Created for children ages 4–10, the series brings together relatable stories, age-appropriate education, creative expression, and resources for parents, caregivers, and educators.

Through friendship, family, humor, difficult questions, and honest feelings, Harmony Street Kids reminds children that they are not alone, their feelings matter, and even when life changes, there are still ways to connect.

Meet Jai, Justis, Bella, Luke, Logan, and Corey. Six children with different personalities, families, experiences, and ways of seeing the world.

What connects them is more than their neighborhood. Each is learning to understand changes in someone they love because of Alzheimer's disease.

Their stories are as different as they are. Some are full of questions, some are filled with frustration, and others explore the sadness and uncertainty that can come with watching a loved one change.

Together, the Harmony Street Kids are learning that understanding Alzheimer's disease doesn't mean having all the answers. It means having people who will listen, help them understand, and remind them that they are supported and loved.

Sometimes Grandma… Forgets My Name

Meet Jai | Age 4

Early experiences with Alzheimer's disease

Jai is bright, outspoken, curious, and everyone’s "baby." She loves listening to Grandma’s stories and playing doctor, especially when Grandma isn’t feeling her best.

But lately, Jai has noticed some things she doesn't understand. Sometimes Grandma forgets names, becomes confused, or needs help with things she once did on her own.

Jai has lots of questions, and she isn't afraid to ask them! With her big brother Justis and Mom helping her understand, Jai discovers that Alzheimer's disease may change what Grandma remembers, but it doesn't erase the special moments they can still share.

Through laughter, music, patience, and love, Jai learns that sometimes connecting with Grandma just looks a little different.

Sometimes Grandma… Gets Mad

Meet Bella | Age 6

Understanding changes in emotions and behavior

Bella is thoughtful, observant, and happiest when she's creating something beautiful. She loves to paint, and sometimes her artwork says more than her words.

Bella is also bilingual, growing up surrounded by English, Spanish, and the familiar warmth of her family, including her beloved Nana.

But Nana has been acting differently. Some days she's frustrated by noise, doesn't want visitors, or becomes upset over little things. Bella doesn't understand why, and sometimes Nana's frustration makes Bella feel angry or sad, too.

As Bella learns more about Alzheimer's disease, she begins to understand that Nana's changing moods aren't her fault, and that she doesn't have to hide her own feelings to make everyone else happy.

With reassurance from her family and a little help from her paintbrush, Bella discovers that even on difficult days, there can still be moments of understanding, creativity, and connection.

Book 3

Sometimes Grandma… Doesn't Know How

Meet Luke & Logan | Age 8

Understanding changes in independence and everyday care

Luke and Logan are identical twins with big personalities, endless energy, and plenty to say. They're curious, mischievous, outspoken, and sometimes finish each other's sentences. But don't let their matching faces fool you. These brothers don't always think alike!

Since Gram moved into their home, the twins have noticed some pretty big changes.

Gram needs help with everyday things she used to manage on her own. Cooking, getting ready for bed, taking medicine, and even keeping up with familiar routines have become more difficult.

The twins have questions. LOTS of questions! And sometimes, what they see doesn't make much sense.

Through their lively conversations, humor, and honest observations, Luke and Logan begin to understand how Alzheimer's disease changes a person's ability to do everyday things and why their family needs additional support.

Along the way, they discover that helping Gram doesn't mean taking on grown-up responsibilities. They can still be kids, make her laugh, share their love, and be part of the family that surrounds her.

Sometimes Grandma… Makes Mommy Sad

Meet Corey | Age 7

Understanding changes in family relationships and emotional well-being

Corey is observant, thoughtful, expressive, and curious about the world around him. Born Deaf, Corey communicates primarily through American Sign Language (ASL), a language shared fluently by his family.

Lately, Corey has noticed that things at home feel different.

Mommy seems sad and distracted. His baby sister, Madison, needs lots of attention, and visits with Grandma aren't quite the same anymore.

Grandma doesn't always recognize the people who love her, and Corey wants to understand why.

Through signed conversations with his family, Corey begins asking important questions about Alzheimer's disease, the changes he's witnessing, and the feelings everyone seems to be carrying.

Corey's story explores how children experience family sadness, uncertainty, and change, while reminding young readers that their questions deserve answers and their feelings deserve attention.

As Corey finds ways to express himself and stay connected with Grandma, he learns that even when families face difficult changes, no one has to navigate them alone.

Meet Justis | From childhood to adulthood

A story still taking shape

Justis is Jai's big brother. Thoughtful, protective, and curious, he was just ten years old when he helped bring Sometimes Grandma… Forgets My Name to life.

As a child, Justis wanted to become a scientist and find a cure for Alzheimer's disease so he could help people like his Grandma. His experiences helped inspire a story that would give other children a way to understand what their families were experiencing.

Today, Justis is an adult, a musician, and a co-creator of Harmony Street Kids.

The next chapter of his story belongs to him.

Sometimes Grandma… Says Goodbye remains a developing concept. Whether Justis chooses to share his own experiences or bring the Harmony Street Kids together to reflect on their journeys will be his decision.

His perspective, his voice, and his vision will shape where the story goes next.

MORE THAN A STORY

Harmony Street Kids was created to help children understand Alzheimer's disease and dementia without losing sight of their own childhood.

Each story explores everyday experiences, difficult emotions, changing family relationships, and ways children can stay connected with the people they love.

The books and accompanying learning resources are designed to encourage questions, conversation, creative expression, and age-appropriate understanding through activities such as journaling, drawing, music, and shared reading.

For parents, caregivers, and educators, the series provides a starting point for conversations that can sometimes be difficult to begin.
